Seriously: if you are unfamiliar with  Linux System Administration and / or LVM, do NOT attempt this!

You could destroy your data easily!

This being said, there are a number of huge advantages to extend your Diskspace via LVM over other means and this has proven to be reliable, scalable and fast.
